'We Didn't Vote To Die At Work' Campaign Launched At Hazards 2010

'We Didn't Vote to Die at Work' Campaign was launched at the Hazards 2010 conference at Keele on 9th to 11th July.

Hilda Palmer from GM Hazards tells Unionsafety that this campaign continues the Hazards fight against any deregulation of H&S and of its enforcement which has of course accelerated mightily under the new government.

Hilda said:

"We didn't vote to die at work is the Hazards Campaign against the Con-Dem government attacks on workplace safety and health.

Hilda Palmer speaking at the IER H&S Conference in Liverpool July'10We need to fight against: the deregulation of H&S law; the misrepresentation of health and safety as silly red tape instead of our human right; the lie that H&S is a burden on business when in fact good H&S pays for itself and business externalises the cost of poor H&S on to us all, paying less than 25% of the cost of the massive burden of death injury and ill-health poor H&S causes; cuts in enforcement that are proposed by the new coalition government.

This includes Lord Young's review of H&S, Vince Cable's deregulatory review of all regulation, Nick Clegg's requests to name a law to be cut, and the overall massive cuts in budgets which will reduce funding for the enforcement agencies -the HSE, LA, Rail Regulator etc."

Join the campaign's Facebook Group which has 380 members already.

The Hazards Campaign has produced some resources to brand  the campaign, provide the message,  give a visual focus that safety reps, union branches, trades councils, our own organisations can use to further the national 'We didn't vote to die at work' campaign in our local areas with MPs, MSPs, Welsh Assembly members,  MEPs, Cllrs, with press; and also to have for specific and national demos/lobbies at relevant events/times.

Unionsafety is urging all Union Safety Reps and Union activists to buy and wear the T-shirt, see attached info,  put up the poster order A4 posters which are free apart from very large orders.

Hilda advised Unionsafety that they had sold over 300 T-shirts at the Hazards conference and safety reps are wearing them,  putting up several thousand posters already  at work, and getting the message around.

She added: "We have had a number of other orders since then with people seeing others wearing them, tutors selling them at TU ED courses - I wore mine at Institute for Employment Rights conference in Liverpool on 13th July, and could have sold 6 if I had them with me."

Hilda also called for a committed Union involvement in the campaign, suggesting:

"Why not buy a few at  £4 each for your own photo-op to mark the start of campaign in your area and put the photo on Face Book, send us  a copy to use in publicity, so we can show it's  a nation wide campaign. Get your local TU Branches and Trades Councils to wear them and lobby your MP, send letter to local press.  You can sell them on too!"

Proving this is not just a UK based campaign, Hilda added:

"We have Families Against Corporate Killers members wearing them in Italy already; the reception staff and caretaker in our office building grabbed them immediately to wear as their uniform after seeing us wear them!"

Same goes for posters - we encourage unions to customise their own.
